Even in wartime, a nation’s legitimacy and unity depend on upholding democratic principles and fighting corruption—otherwise, what are we defending? Zelensky made the right call by listening to the people and reversing course, because strong, independent institutions are what set free nations apart from authoritarian regimes. Ukraine needs to show the world it stands for civic values and the rule of law if it wants lasting support and a real shot at EU membership.
