Vice President Kamala Harris called Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio to congratulate him on being selected as Donald J. Trump’s running mate and to express her hope that he would participate in a CBS News debate against her, according to two Biden campaign aides with knowledge of their conversation.
The offer from CBS is for a debate on Aug. 13 in Washington, D.C., according to one of the Biden aides, who were both granted anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The Biden campaign had accepted CBS’s invitation in May.
“Vice President Harris is prepared to debate J.D. Vance,” T.J. Ducklo, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, said in a call with reporters on Monday afternoon. “We have accepted the proposal from CBS News.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a former colleague of Ms. Harris’s in the Senate, told reporters on Monday that she had full confidence in the vice president’s debating ability.
