This whole situation with Zelensky is a perfect example of why strong, independent institutions are so important for democracy. When power gets concentrated in the hands of one leader—even if that leader is popular or in a crisis—it always leads to bad outcomes like this. The public outcry shows Ukrainians value personal liberty and transparent governance, which is encouraging. It’s worrying that Zelensky thought he could get away with undermining anti-corruption agencies, but at least the EU and civil society pressure worked this time. Ukraine's path toward Europe has to be built on real checks and balances, not just promises from politicians.

Honestly, this whole situation is pretty disappointing but not surprising—strong, independent anti-corruption institutions are non-negotiable if Ukraine wants to move closer to Europe. Zelensky caving to public and EU pressure shows how essential civic engagement and international oversight are for keeping leaders accountable. Social democracy is all about transparent government and rule of law, so undermining anti-corruption efforts is a huge red flag. If Ukraine really wants to build a fair, modern society, these kinds of power grabs can't be tolerated.
