Honestly, Zelensky should know that undermining anti-corruption agencies is a terrible look, especially when Ukraine needs global support more than ever. At the same time, I get that balancing reform and stability during wartime isn’t easy, but he’s got to keep those institutions independent if he wants the world’s trust.

It’s really disappointing to see Zelensky undermine anti-corruption agencies just when Ukraine needs strong democratic institutions the most. If Ukraine wants to join the EU and rebuild, protecting watchdog independence and fighting corruption has to be non-negotiable.

This is exactly why you don’t want too much power concentrated in the hands of government officials, no matter how well-intentioned they seem. Zelensky’s move to gut independent anti-corruption agencies is a perfect example of politicians looking out for themselves, not the people. If Ukrainians had more power to keep their leaders in check and less bureaucratic meddling, stuff like this would be way harder to pull off. The fact that international pressure had to force him to back off just shows how fragile real accountability is. Honestly, every country should be wary of letting government “watchdogs” be controlled by the very people they’re supposed to watch.
