Honestly, this just proves why Ukraine needs to focus on its own national interests instead of constantly trying to please the EU and Western powers. Zelensky’s back-and-forth shows he’s more worried about foreign approval than what’s actually good for Ukraine. Anti-corruption laws are important, sure, but they shouldn’t be dictated by outside forces trying to reshape the country in their image. Our leaders need to put Ukrainian sovereignty first, even if it means pushing back against international pressure. At the end of the day, only Ukrainians should decide how to run their own government.

This is exactly why checks and balances matter, even during wartime. Zelensky’s attempt to centralize power just undermines the trust Western allies and Ukrainians have in his government. If Ukraine wants real support from the West, they can’t go back to the old corrupt ways.

Protecting independent anti-corruption agencies is absolutely essential if Ukraine wants to be seen as a legitimate, modern nation rooted in democratic values. Zelensky needs to remember that true national strength comes from upholding the rule of law and earning the trust of all citizens, not just pushing through wartime measures.

It’s pretty disappointing to see Zelensky try to undermine anti-corruption agencies—those independent checks are essential if Ukraine wants to stay on the democratic path and eventually join the EU. Glad to see public pressure actually worked here, but this should be a wake-up call that democracy can’t just be put on pause, even during a war.

If Ukraine wants real democracy and EU membership, gutting anti-corruption agencies is the exact opposite of what they should be doing—public pressure clearly works, so let’s hope Zelensky listens this time.
