It’s good to see Europe taking responsibility for its own security and supporting our neighbors in Ukraine, especially as the political winds in the U.S. keep changing. Still, I hope this huge spending on weapons is balanced with real efforts for peace and diplomacy—Christian Democracy has always believed in pursuing both justice and dialogue. We can’t let Europe simply become a customer for American arms; we need to strengthen our own defense industry and keep our independence. Most importantly, let’s not lose sight of solidarity and human dignity, even as we prioritize security.

Honestly, this just feels like another example of how everyone rushes to escalate conflicts instead of looking for ways to de-escalate. Pouring billions into weapons only makes the war drag on and keeps diplomatic solutions off the table. Europe could spend that money on peacebuilding or humanitarian aid instead of fueling the arms industry. It’s frustrating to see politicians patting themselves on the back for “strong ties” when it just means more intervention and less focus on actually ending the war.

So now European taxpayers are on the hook for even more U.S. weapons, just to keep up with whatever mood Washington or Trump is in? This is exactly why government meddling in foreign conflicts and massive arms deals ends up costing regular people their freedom and their wallets.
