As someone who values classical liberal principles, this whole situation is pretty alarming. Strong, independent institutions that keep government power in check are absolutely essential for democracy and individual liberty. Zelensky undermining anti-corruption agencies is a step in the wrong direction if Ukraine wants to be taken seriously by the EU and its Western allies. It’s good that public pressure forced a reversal, but it makes you question how committed the government really is to transparency and rule of law. At the end of the day, real reforms and genuine checks on power are what Ukraine needs—not just empty promises when there’s backlash.

Honestly, this whole situation is really disappointing. For years, progressives have been rooting for Ukraine to build stronger, more transparent democratic institutions, and undermining anti-corruption agencies is a huge step backward. It’s good that public pressure forced Zelensky to backtrack, but it shouldn’t have taken mass protests for him to do the right thing. If Ukraine wants real EU integration and lasting reform, protecting these watchdogs has to be non-negotiable.
