Honestly, this is pretty worrying for anyone who cares about democracy and social justice. Independent anti-corruption bodies are essential if Ukraine wants to build a fairer society and actually move closer to the EU. Zelensky’s backtrack is good, but the fact that he even tried to strip these agencies’ independence shows there’s still a lot of pressure from old power structures. Social democrats should always support strong, transparent institutions that hold leaders accountable—otherwise, it’s regular people who pay the price. The protests show Ukrainians aren’t willing to let this slide, which is inspiring. Let’s hope this is a wake-up call for the government to put genuine democratic reforms ahead of political convenience.

Zelensky’s move to gut independent anti-corruption agencies is exactly the kind of government overreach classical liberals have always warned about. Concentrating power in the executive, especially at the expense of transparency, is a surefire way to erode public trust and stall real reform. Ukraine’s path to a freer society and closer ties with the West depends on strong, independent institutions—not politicians meddling for short-term gains. Glad to see civil society push back, but it’s a reminder that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
